Learning and Talking About Moral Distress

Family Contact Facilitators and child‑ and family‑serving professionals regularly navigate emotionally complex situations with limited time, competing demands, and high‑stakes decisions. This session focuses on moral distress—the experience of knowing the right thing to do but being unable to act due to systemic, organizational, or situational constraints. Participants will explore: • What moral distress is and why it is common in child welfare settings • Examples of situations that lead to moral distress during family contact • Emotional and physical signs that workers may experience • Practical ways to talk about moral distress, seek support, and strengthen resilience • Organizational strategies that can support workforce wellbeing Presenter: Amy He, PhD, MSW, LCSW — Associate Professor, Graduate School of Social Work, University of Denver; Faculty Affiliate, Butler Institute for Families; Certified Professional Coach.
