CJW DVPO Waiver Training Program

January 13, 2027 @ 9:00 am - March 17, 2027 @ 5:00 pm

Alaska Legal Services Corporation offers a Community Justice Worker (CJW) Domestic Violence Protective Order (DVPO) waiver training program for individuals who work or volunteer at domestic violence or sexual assault (DV/SA) agencies in Alaska. This program helps DV/SA agencies strengthen staff capacity to provide trauma-informed, limited-scope legal assistance to survivors.

Training Overview
This 10-week training combines weekly live instruction with practical application. Participants attend one-hour Zoom sessions each week and complete readings, court observations and self-paced videos throughout the course. The program concludes with a mock trial, giving participants hands-on experience in a supportive setting.

After Training
After completing the training, ALSC helps participants apply for a waiver under Alaska Bar Rule 43.5. If approved, participants may provide limited-scope representation to eligible clients through ALSC’s volunteer program. This may include:

  • Providing legal advice to individuals seeking protective orders
  • Assisting with completing legal forms
  • Preparing clients for mediation or protective order hearings
  • Representing survivors in protective order hearings

Eligibility and Next Steps
To participate, applicants must be referred by an Alaska-based domestic violence shelter, sexual assault agency, or Tribal organization and commit to completing the 10-week course of study through Alaska Legal Services Corporation.
