In this workshop we will examine ways of viewing psychosis, first from the lens of neuroscience looking at disruptions in neural processing and the salience network, then considering how language and the power to communicate ideas and makes sense of the world is disrupted in deeply personal ways. We will then examine how cannabis may play a role in sparking, exacerbating, and perpetuating episodes of psychosis. Finally, through case examples and role plays, we will explore how to best empower individuals and their support system to reduce the risks that cannabis poses in terms of mental health disruption.

Training Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to..

  1. Identify three neuroscientific theories which explain the underlying pathophysiology of psychosis
  2. List two major components of cannabis and talk about the general impact of these
  3. Explore with youth and families the extent to which an episode of cannabis-induced psychosis places an individual at risk for developing a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder
  4. Draw upon at least two resources that can help young people and families further consider the link between cannabis and psychosis and/or promote treatment collaboration

Cost is $20.
