The Dave Thomas Foundation team will shine a light on why keeping connections with family, culture and community is so vital in child welfare. We will explore how these relationships positively impact youths’ well-being and resilience, and we will debunk the myth that family ties should be cut when children are placed in foster care. Additionally, we will highlight the need for a shift in how we think about child welfare-one that puts the voices and well-being of children and their families first.
Learning Objectives:
1. Explain why maintaining contact with kin, culture, and community is essential for children, particularly those in foster care.
2. Describe how family, belonging, and permanency impact a child’s sense of security and ability to thrive.
3. Apply strategies for building and maintaining connections with kin, culture, and community, including diligent search methods and family engagement.
