SUMMARY:Breaking the Myth of Independence- Making Invisable Support Visable
DESCRIPTION:Dominant societal culture promotes transitioning to adulthood at 18\, with full independence as a sign of success. This independence is often marked by leaving home for secondary education\, getting a job\, or joining the military. Individuals needing support are deemed a “failure to launch”\, thus increasing stigma for themselves and their families. Many individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities\, such as FASD\, frequently benefit from additional time and support in the transitioning years\, yet may not qualify for formal programs. These young adults need a “safety net” to minimize challenges to adaptive\, social-emotional\, and occupational well-being. By considering the components of interdependent growth evident in common systems of scaffolding for adulthood\, we can break down the myth of independence as a normative goal. Through a series of interactive experiences\, participants will examine society’s built-in “safety net”\, identify its components\, and receive a tool to support those unable to access it. \nTraining Objectives:\n1. Participants will analyze and identify the invisible safety net of interdependence and its components. \n2. Participants will have a concrete tool to normalize interdependence and support the development of an individualized “safety net”

SUMMARY:Alternatives to Violence BASIC Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This beginning basic training will present conflict resolution skills through experiential learning exercises and practice with the goal of helping Direct Service providers and community members to think about and make choices to reduce conflicts in work and everyday settings. This is an intensive\, three-day learning experience which teaches interpersonal conflict resolution skills through a series of step-by-step processes. These shared experiences in small groups and one-to-one interactions build a sense of community and trust through exercises focusing on 5 goals: \n\nBuild Community: We build community by sharing our thoughts about our experience here and by creating a safe non-judgmental space and by giving importance to what is shared by each person and encouraging participation by all.\nAffirmation of ourselves and others: This means that we are going to listen to each other and treat each other with respect. We learn the art of enhancing the self-esteem of others. This is also a way to enhance our own self-esteem.\nCommunication Skills: We will work on improving our communication skills. Good communication is key to conflict resolution.\nCooperation: We will learn to work together in cooperation to reach a mutual goal.

SUMMARY:All Alaska Pediatric Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Pediatric Symposium brings together an exceptional lineup of local and nationally recognized experts\, leaders who are shaping the future of pediatric care. As Alaska’s only pediatric-focused networking and Continuing Medical Education (CME) event\, the Symposium serves as a dynamic hub for connection\, collaboration\, and professional growth. \nDesigned for Alaska’s dedicated community of health care providers and professionals\, the Symposium offers an engaging forum to explore evidence-based best practices\, emerging research\, and innovative advancements in pediatric health care. The 2025 Symposium featured a rich and wide-ranging agenda that reflected the most pressing issues facing children and adolescents today. Sessions explored topics such as Mental Health in Children and Youth in Alaska\, Hepatitis Vaccines\, Social Media and Teen Well-Being\, Pediatric Brain Tumors\, Youth Depression\, Adolescent Acetaminophen Overdoses\, Acute Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease in Alaska\, and Paths to Partnership: Tribal\, Federal\, and Academic Systems Working Together to Improve Indigenous Child Health along with many more thought-provoking discussions. \nEqually important\, the Symposium creates a rare and invaluable opportunity for providers to connect face to face. In a state as geographically vast as Alaska\, gathering in person fosters meaningful conversations\, strengthens professional relationships\, and sparks new collaborations across communities and disciplines. Attendees have the chance to exchange ideas\, share real-world experiences\, and build lasting partnerships that extend well beyond the conference itself. \nMore than a conference\, the Pediatric Symposium is a catalyst for innovation\, connection\, and progress advancing the health and well-being of Alaska’s children while strengthening the network of professionals dedicated to their care. \nThe 2026 Symposium agenda will be available in September. We look forward to welcoming you to another year of inspiration\, education\, and connection at the 2026 Pediatric Symposium.
